Downsizing After a Move: Why Steve Still Had Too Much Stuff
Earlier this year, Steve came to me in a quandary.
He was moving from a 2,400 to an 1,100 square foot “forever” home he rebuilt from the ground up and calls the treehouse, because you can see trees from the many panoramic windows.
He’d done some downsizing beforehand, but was worried, would it be enough?
Short answer?
Nope.
The movers dropped everything into his new place, burying him in boxes.
And as we began sorting and unpacking, it became quickly apparent, we’d need to reduce everything a further 20% or more.
It was a bit daunting for him at first…
…where could he possibly make cuts?
But his “aha” moments piled up.
😳 “I don’t actually need that 30-year-old vase from a distant cousin… I don’t even like it.”
😳 “I have 6 wine openers, 5 more than I thought! Why do I have so many?”
😳 “I’ve been moving these shirts back and forth across the country for decades and will never wear them again.”
See, Steve never really stopped to think about many of his belongings. He’d just kept bringing things with him, out of habit.
He told me he would’ve spun for weeks trying to figure it out on his own, bouncing from spot to spot, making little progress.
But together, we made quick work of the downsizing and unpacking.
In fact, he told me “I have so much more energy working with you! I can work longer and get more done when we’re together!”
Now Steve is in his forever home. Settled. Happy. Reveling in the oasis he created.
And that’s why I love what I do!
I love helping my 60-something and beyond clients find the joy and freedom of living in a home they love.
