Getting Started

What is downsizing, and how is it different from decluttering?

Downsizing means intentionally reducing your belongings to fit a new home, a new chapter, or a new stage of life — often tied to a move, a life transition, or simply wanting less to manage.

Decluttering is broader: it's the ongoing practice of clearing out what no longer serves you, whether or not you're moving anywhere. Many downsizing projects include decluttering along the way, but downsizing always has a destination in mind — a smaller home, a loved one's house, or the next chapter of your life.

I'm ready to downsize my home. Where do we start?

We start with a conversation — about your goals, timeline, and what your next chapter looks like for you. On my first visit to your home, I'll review your space and devise a plan that meets your goals and moves at your pace.

You stay in control of every decision; I bring the structure and support to see it through.

I'm an adult child helping my parents downsize. Can you help us?

Absolutely. If you're like many adult children, you're already balancing a career, your own home, family, and countless other responsibilities. If you live out of town, finding the time to help your parents sort through decades of belongings can be especially challenging.

It's also an emotional rollercoaster for everyone involved. Especially when navigating your parents' sense of loss at all that's leaving their orbit… as well as the physical need to reduce what they own.

But knowing your parents have someone they can trust to be kind, respectful, and patient can bring enormous peace of mind — along with real relief that this important transition will get done, in a way that protects your family's time, energy, and relationships.

Can a professional organizer help make moving easier?

A professional organizer can make moving much easier by helping you make intentional decisions before you pack. Organizing your belongings for this next step. And creating a clear plan for what moves with you, what goes to loved ones, and what gets donated, sold, recycled, or disposed of.

I'll also help you create simple inventory checklists for packed boxes so finding what you need after the move is much easier. The result is a move that's more organized, less stressful, and far easier to manage from beginning to end.

When is the best time to start downsizing?

The best time to start downsizing is now — before you have to move, and before an unexpected life change makes things difficult.

Starting now gives you the time and space to make thoughtful decisions without the pressure of looming deadlines or other constraints. Plus, you'll enjoy the benefits of a lighter, more spacious home while making any future transition much less stressful.

Downsizing Through Life Transitions

Why does downsizing feel so hard emotionally?

Because it's not really about the stuff — it's about identity, memory, and loss. Research on decision fatigue and attachment shows that every item you touch triggers a decision and an emotional weigh-in, which is exhausting in a way that has nothing to do with procrastination or indecisiveness.

Understanding why it feels hard is often the first step to making it feel manageable — and it's a big part of how I guide clients through the process, with patience for the emotional weight, not just the physical one.

I need to help a parent move into assisted living or senior living. Where do I start?

Start with me, before you start packing boxes. These moves often come with a compressed timeline and a lot of emotion, and having a clear plan from day one makes an enormous difference.

I'll help you sort what comes with your mom or dad (or both your parents) to their new space, what stays with family, and what needs to go — while keeping a pace that's right for everyone involved.

How do you support someone downsizing after the loss of a spouse?

Gently, and at your pace. Downsizing after losing a spouse is rarely just about belongings — it's about sorting through a shared life, often while grieving.

I'll never rush you through decisions that deserve time, and I'll help you find ways to honor what mattered most while creating a home that supports you in this next chapter.

You’ll feel safe and cared for through every step.

Deciding What Stays & Goes

How do I know what to keep when downsizing?

One of the hardest parts of downsizing is deciding what truly belongs in your next chapter.

I'll guide you through each category of belongings to help you identify what you use, love, and value most — as well as what will fit in your next home – so you can donate, pass on, sell, or responsibly dispose of the rest.

Can you help me downsize sentimental belongings and family heirlooms?

Sentimental belongings and family heirlooms are often the most difficult part of downsizing because they're connected to memories, relationships, and important chapters of life.

That's why I'll help you take the time to honor those memories and preserve what matters most, so you feel at peace whatever you decide to do with them.

Will you make me get rid of things I'm not ready to part with?

No. There's never pressure to get rid of more than feels right. Every decision is yours. My role is to help you make confident decisions and organize what remains to support the life you want to live today.

What should I do with belongings my family and I no longer want?

You can donate, sell, recycle, or dispose of those items responsibly. I'll help you sort what goes into each category. And depending on your package, I'll take a carload of donations per session to immediately lighten your home. I can also refer you to my trusted partners for bulk donation pickup, sustainable junk disposal, moving support, and more.

How do you handle donations and other items leaving my home?

Carefully – and always with your approval. You make the final decision about everything that leaves your home.

As we work, I’ll help you identify what you’re ready to let go of and keep track of what’s being donated, sold, or passed along to family and friends. Before anything is removed, we’ll review the items together so we’re both completely clear about what you’ve decided to release.

This extra step protects you and gives you peace of mind – especially during a large project when many belongings may be moving in different directions. Nothing leaves your home for donation or disposal without your knowledge and approval.

I have valuable antiques or artwork. Can you help me sell them?

I'll introduce you to my trusted network of accredited appraisers and sellers to work with, so your valuable pieces get the expert attention – and return – they deserve.

I need to sell most of my home's contents. Can you help with that too?

If you plan to sell the bulk of your home furnishings, I can refer you to reputable, insured estate sale specialists who can manage the entire sale process from start to finish, so you don't have to navigate it alone.

To make this process easier and less stressful, I can help you decide what you wish to keep or pass on beforehand. This will help you avoid any future regrets about what goes into the sale.

Planning Your Downsizing Project

How long does the downsizing process usually take?

It depends on the size of your home, how much is in it, your readiness to part with some of your belongings, and how quickly you move through the decision-making process.

Some clients focus on one room at a time over several weeks or months, while others prefer to tackle an entire home as soon as possible. During your consultation, we'll create a realistic plan that fits your goals, energy, and timeline.

What geographic areas do you serve?

I work with clients throughout Providence, Rhode Island, and surrounding communities, as well as Cape Cod, Massachusetts, with a focus on the Outer Cape.

How much does downsizing support cost?

I offer 6-, 12-, and 24-hour packages, priced at $495, $995, and $1,995, respectively. With package pricing, you know exactly what you're investing upfront, rather than working with an open-ended hourly rate that can make the final cost harder to predict.

You also stay in control of how your project unfolds.

For instance, you can start with one space and one package, a great way to pace a larger downsizing project when you have several months to work on it. Then you can add packages until it's complete. If you want to get your project done as soon as possible or you're working against a tight deadline, you can choose a larger package from the start. That way, you can reserve the days and times you need to meet your goals.

During your consultation, we'll talk through your goals and timeline, and I'll recommend the best place to begin.

Bottom line? You have the flexibility to move at the pace that's right for you!

How can starting now make things easier for my family later?

One of the most loving gifts you can give your family is to begin downsizing your belongings while you're fully in control of the process. Doing so relieves loved ones from facing hundreds — or even thousands — of difficult decisions about your things after you're gone, along with the physical burden of removing them.

And by taking care of this critical task now, you'll have the peace of mind of knowing your treasures found their way to people who really want and appreciate them.
